By linking local industries that operate independently and creating a platform for exchange amongst existing and future industries, we propose a new “intra-creek” network. The efficient connective system of this network will encourage a new industrial symbiosis to occur and will generate a recycling economy, where waste will become a valuable good.

Currently, artists are moving into the neighborhood due to affordable land and we see them as assets to re-mediate the conditions of the site. The waste on the site generated by existing industries, such as recyclables, stone sediment, sawdust, scrap metals, etc. will be materials for artists and designers thus appealing strongly to those with environmental interests.  These same conditions also appeal to scientists specifically interested in bio-materials and additionally, the polluted conditions serve as points of interest for ecologist and other scientists interested in remediation efforts.  In order to build on the artists settlement and encourage the science community to come we propose a barge system that will link incoming artists and scientists to materials. This network will depend on a partnership between the local NGOs such as Newtown Creek Alliance, GMDC and Riverkeeper (who recently received a $625,000 grant for BOA) and the government.

The site presents opportunities in its plenitude of vacant spaces and abandoned shipping containers.  These containers can be converted into working places for the incoming artists, designers and scientists on these vacant lands. The conversions will be executed by the designers themselves. Additionally, through the creation of bike paths an artist-to-scientist-to-scientist-to-artist linkage will supplement the artist+scientist-to-materials connection further strengthening the symbiotic relationship.

In turn, this network of junk/environmental artists will generate economic flow, interest for visitors and assist in remediation efforts of the site by creating street art, earth art and other installations (such as George Trakas’ nature walk). Due to the accessibility for artists to Manhattan ave and its once existing connection with Vernon Blvd we envision the primary street installation happening along this corridor.  This installation is further justified by GMDC on one side of the embankment and the circus and film industries on the other side.

To keep the economic engine running the art created on site will be further exhibited and exported.  The formal exhibition space will be on the bridge linking the informal street exhibitions on both sides of the bridge.
